CD/DVD Releases -Week of Jan. 23: Riccardo Chailly’s Puccini Series is Unveiled

This week two new DVDs will be released featuring some of the greatest singers in the world.

Puccini’s “Turandot”

The first of Riccardo Chailly’s Puccini series will be released this week from Decca Classics. The DVD, which was recorded in 2015 features an all star cast that includes Nina Stemme, Maria Agresta and Aleksandrs Antonenko. The new DVD has the version completed by Luciano Berio in 2001, which is also featured at 2002 Salzburg Festival production. The DVD also showcases Nikolaus Lehnhoff’s new production. This “Turandot” will likely be followed by Puccini’s “La Fanciulla del West.”

Schoenberg’s “Gurre-Lieder”

Gurre-Lieder is a large cantata for five vocal soloists, narrator, chorus and large orchestra, composed by Arnold Schoenberg. The piece is generally sung in concert but the Dutch National Opera has staged the work by Pierre Audi. The production stars Anna Larrson, Emily Magee, Burkhard Fritz and Marcus Marquardt. Marc Albrecht conducts the acclaimed version by Opus Arte.

Decca and Eloquence

The budget label by Decca will release two remastered CDs. The first CD features James McCracken and Sandra Warfield in some of the most popular Verismo arias and duets by Giordano, Mascagni and Puccini. The second CD features Ticho Parly singing Wagner.
