CD/DVD Releases – Week of August 7: Bellini Rediscovered In New Naxos Recording

By Francisco Salazar

For opera lovers interested in discovering new artists and new works, this week will be perfect as Naxos releases two intriguing recordings with new editions of popular modern and classic operas. Here is a look.

Vincenzo Bellini’s Bianca e Gernando

Naxos releases the world premiere recording of Bellini’s first opera today known in its revised edition as “Bianca e Fernando.” Originally presented in 1826, the opera did not use the name of Fernando because it was forbidden due to the fact that Ferdinando was the name of the heir to the throne, and no form of it could be used on a royal stage. This recording stars Maxim Mironov and Silvia Dalla Benetta and is conducted by Antonino Fogliami. This release is a must for all those Bellini and Bel Canto lovers.

The Scarlett Letter

Laura Claycomb and Dominic Armstrong star in Naxos’ new version of Lori Laitman’s “The Scarlett Letter.” The work, which first premiered in 2008, is heard in this new release in its revised 2015-16 edition.  For lovers of modern music, this is an intriguing new recording that must be experienced.
