CD / DVD Releases – Week of January 29: Sonya Yoncheva & Joseph Calleja Pay Homage To Verdi

This week, two of the most celebrated artists of our time pay homage to Verdi. Both singers, now in their primes put two distinguished programs together that showcase new repertoire and a new facet of their careers.

Verdi 

Sonya Yoncheva records her third solo album for Sony featuring a delightful selection of Verdi’s most popular and uncommon arias. The album showcases arias from “Otello,” “Luisa Miller,” “Stiffelio,” “La Forza del Destino,” “Simon Boccanegra,” “Il Trovatore,” “Nabucco,” “Attila,” and “Don Carlos.” Massimo Zanetti conducts the Münchner Rundfunkorchester.

Verdi 

Joseph Calleja explores the dramatic tenor roles of Verdi taking on the likes of “Otello” and “Il Trovatore.” The album also includes arias from “Aida” and “La Forza del Destino.” Calleja also includes duets featuring Vittorio Vitelli and Angela Gheorghiu, who is featured in both the “Otello” and “Trovatore” selections. Ramón Tebar conducts the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana in this Decca release.
