CD / DVD Releases – Week of January 15: Joyce DiDonato, Franco Fagioli & Daniela Dessi Among New Releases

This week sees the release of a world premiere recording, a second solo recital, and an opera featuring a legendary singer.

Great Scott

Erato releases the world premiere recording of Jake Heggie’s 2015 opera “Great Scott.” The recording, which was made at the Dallas Opera stars Joyce DiDonato in the leading role, Ailyn Pérez, Frederica Von Stade, Nathan Gunn, and Anthony Roth Costanzo. Patrick Summers conducts.

Handel 

After the success of his Rossini album, Franco Fagioli returns with his second solo album for Deutsche Grammophon. This time the countertenor recorded arias with specialist period-instrument ensemble Il pomo d’oro, and features 12 favorite arias from Handel’s “Serse,” “Rinaldo,” and “Ariodante.”

Fedora

Dynamic will release a recording of the late Daniela Dessi in the title role of “Fedora.” Recorded live from the Teatro Carlo Felice, the work also stars Fabio Armiliato and is conducted by Valerio Galli. The company will also release a DVD.

Songs of Vain Glory

Sophie Bevan and pianist Sebastian Wybrew recorded an album dedicated to song. Among the composers performed on the Wigmore Hall release are Elgar, Holst, Haydn, Britten, Bridge and Ives among others.
