CD / DVD Releases – Week of 1/14

Diana Damrau, Jonas Kaufmann & María José Siri Headline New Releases

By Francisco Salazar

This week, two major releases will be available commercially by three of the most acclaimed artists in the industry. Here is a look at what we recommend this week.

Wolf: Italienisches Liederbuch

Diana Damrau and Jonas Kaufmann team up for an album that puts a spotlight on Wolf’s complete Italian Lieder with pianist Helmut Deutsch. The new CD comes after the tour that the two went on last year. It is the first major collaboration between the two artists even though they were both featured a recording of “Der Rosnekavalier” a few years ago. Erato releases the new album which is slated for U.S. release later this year.

Here is an excerpt from the release.

Madama Butterfly

Decca releases the third opera in the new Riccardo Chailly series following “Turandot” and “Giovanna d’Arco.” This time the company releases Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” in its original version with María José Siri and Bryan Hymel. The work also features Carlos Alvarez and Annalisa Stroppa in a new production by Alvis Hermanis.
