Carnegie Hall To Host Giusppe Giacomini Opera Gala

A week from today, Carnegie Hall audiences will get a chance to experience the Giuseppe Giacomini Opera Gala at the Zankel Hall. The performance, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, April 4, is slated to honor the famed tenor who is celebrating the 40th anniversary of his Met Opera debut in Verdi’s “La Forza del Destino.”

The gala will feature performances from numerous artists including Nancy Fabiola Herrera, Alessandra Marc, Dongwon Shin, Natasha Novitskaia, Grigory Soloviov, Eglise Gutierrez, Fanyong Du and Isaachah Savage among others. Eve Queler will conduct members of the Opera Orchestra of New York.

The guest will feature a number of honored guests including Sherrill Milnes, Neil Shicoff, Marilyn Zschau, Marilyn Horne, Barry Tucker and Renata Scotto. Matthew Laifer, who is in charge of the gala and served as the tenor’s manager, noted that Plácido Domingo was also invited to the gala, but will be unable to attend due to engagements outside the country. He will send a video with remarks.

The tenor and his family will also be in attendance.

Giacomini was born on Sept 7, 1940, in Veggiano, Italy. He made his professional debut in 1966 in Vercelli in “Madama Butterfly.” He made his debut outside Italy in Berlin in 1970 in the role of Des Grieux in “Manon Lescaut.” His American debut came in Buenos Aires in 1974 in “Madama Butterfly” and “Il Tabarro.” From there he returned to his native home for major debuts in Rome, Milan, and Turin among others.

He would obtain numerous honors including the title of Kammersänger of the Staatsoper in Wien, the Gold Viotti, the Giovanni Zenatello Prize, the C.A.Capelli Prize, the Gold Mascagni and the Giovanni Martinelli Prize. He is also Commendatore of the Ordine di San Gregorio Magno, a Vatican order of knighthood.
