Sonya Yoncheva has cancelled all performances for the month of January.

The Bulgarian soprano was slated to perform the role of Massenet’s “Manon” at the Monte Carlo Opera, but has pulled out citing severe back pain. The company is now tasked with finding a quick replacement as the production kicks off on Jan. 20 and runs through the 27^th. The four performances will now be split between Anne-Catherine Gillet who will take on the 20^th and 22^nd while Vannina Santoni will make her debut at the opera house on the 25^th and 27^th.

Yoncheva left a message on Facebook in French apologizing for the last minute.

“Dear friends, I regret to inform you that due to severe back pains, I must cancel my performances of ‘Manon’ at Monte Carlo for the entire month of January. Unfortunately my participation in ‘Victoires de la Musique’ 2017 in France is also in doubt.

I hope that the medical treatment that I am about to begin will give me results as soon as possible so that I may continue with the rest of my season with success. I apologize to those that were waiting and anticipating, like myself, my debut in one of my dream roles. I am sure that the future will give me another opportunity to take on Massent’s Manon.

Les Victoires is an awards ceremony in France. In February Yoncheva is slated to return to the Metropolitan Opera for a run of “La Traviata” in Willy Decker’s extremely physical production. That run is slated for an HD performance that will be broadcast around the world.

Only time will tell if Yoncheva’s treatment will have the intended effect or if the soprano will join the likes of Jonas Kaufmann and Dmitri Hvorostovsky as recent singers to take extended breaks for health concerns.
