Breaking News: Sonya Yoncheva Cancels ‘Eugene Onegin’ At The Paris National Opera

By Francisco Salazar

Sonya Yoncheva has cancelled her upcoming performances of “Eugene Onegin” at the Paris National Opera.

In a statement the soprano said that Tatiana no longer suited her “both in terms of the character and of her musical writing.” She also noted that she would not sing the role in any future production. Yoncheva was to sing “Eugene Onegin” in the June run of the Paris Opera alternating with Anna Netrebko. In December Yoncheva made her role debut as Tatiana at the Deustche Oper Berlin where critics praised her work.

Australian soprano Nicole Car will take over the run for Yoncheva. Car is a regular at the Opera Australia where she has performed Donna Anna, Donna Elvira, Pamina, Leïla from “Les Pêcheurs de Perles,” Micaëla from “Carmen,” Tatiana, Mimì from “La Bohème,” Valencienne in “Die Lustige Witwe” and the Italian Singer in “Capriccio.”

This is the second high profile cancellation for Yoncheva this year. She was scheduled to perform Manon in Massenet’s opera at the Opera de Monte Carlo but cancelled due to back problems. She returned to the stage this month at the Victories concert where she performed music from Puccini and Handel. Yoncheva is currently rehearsing Verdi’s “La Traviata” at the Metropolitan Opera with Michael Fabiano and Thomas Hampson. She is also scheduled to sing the title role of Puccini’s “La Boheme” at the Teatro alla Scala. She returns to the Paris National Opera in October for a new production of Verdi’s “Don Carlo.”

Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” is scheduled for May 16 to June 14.
