Roberto Aronicia will take over the role of Don Jose on Feb. 7 and 11 in Bizet’s “Carmen” at the Metropolitan Opera.

The tenor will step in for Marcelo Alvarez who is ill. Aronica becomes the second tenor this season who is filling in for Alvarez.

On opening night Rafael Davila made a heroic debut as he stepped in an hour before the show. Subsequent performances were sung by Alvarez before stepping out for two performances.

Aronica made his Met debut as Alfredo in Verdi’s “La Traviata” in 1998. Since then he has performed Verdi’s “Rigoletto,” Puccini’s “La Boheme” and “Madama Butterfly” with the company. His most recent appearance at the Met last season was when he stepped in for Massimo Giordano as Cavaradossi in Puccini’s “Tosca” alongside Angela Gheorghiu. The tenor recently performed Pollione in Bellini’s “Norma” at the Teatro Real de Madrid as well as the title role in Verdi’s “Stiffelio” in Bilbao. He is next scheduled to appear at the Teatro di San Carlo as Des Grieux in Puccini’s “Manon Lescaut” and as Don Jose at the Teatro dell’ Opera di Roma.

The Met’s current production of “Carmen” saw one major cancellation earlier this month. Sophie Koch was originally scheduled to make her role debut but cancelled due to illness. As a result, Clementine Margaine took over and made her Met debut earlier than expected.

Alvarez is scheduled to return for the last two performances.
