Breaking News: Pretty Yende Replaces Diana Damrau in ‘I Puritani;’ Alvarez Cancels Another ‘Carmen’ Performance

Two major cancellations were announced on Monday at the Metropolitan Opera.

First it was announced that Diana Damrau would not partake in the second performance of “I Puritani” on Tuesday, Feb. 14 and then it was revealed tenor Marcelo Alvarez would also withhold from performing the performance of “Carmen” on Feb. 15.

Pretty Yende, coming off a thrilling running of “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” at the Met and set for “Roméo et Juliette” next month will replace Damrau who has been struggling with illness for the better part of a month. Despite that her performance on Friday in “I Puritani’s” opening show. Of her work, OperaWire wrote, “As everyone knows, a Damrau performance is more than just vocal genius. The German soprano is one of the finest actresses in the opera world as well and she managed to score big in arguably one of the most challenging roles she will ever have to portray.”

Yende sang the role of Elvira last year in Zürich.

Meanwhile Alvarez will be replaced by Roberto Aronica in the role of Don José. Aronica has already sung two performances of the run on the seventh and 11. Alvarez was also replaced by Rafael Davila in various performances of “Carmen” this season, including the season opening showcase.
