Breaking: Maria Agresta Pulls Out of Salzburg ‘I Due Foscari,’ Which Stars Plácido Domingo

By David Salazar

Maria Agresta has pulled out of two concert performances of Verdi’s “I Due Foscari” as she undergoes an operation.

In her stead, audiences will hear Chinese soprano Guanqun Yu. Yu placed second in the 2012 Operalia Competition and has showcased her talents around the world. In 2017-18 she is slated to take on the role of Liù in “Turandot” at the Met Opera and at the Opernhaus Zürich. She will also perform Mimì in “La Bohème” in Munich and will also take on performances of Michaëla in “Carmen” and Vivetta in “L’Arlesiana” before the season is done. She is also going to appear as Elettra in a new production of “Idomeneo” in Zürich as well.

Agresta is coming off a successful run of “Otello” at the Royal Opera House where she appeared alongside Jonas Kaufmann. There is no telling how long she will be out of commission after the surgery, but it is possible that she misses her “Traviata” performances in late August and possibly even some September performances of “Turandot” and “La Bohème” in San Francisco and London, respectively.

“I Due Foscari” will star Plácido Domingo and Joseph Calleja with Michele Mariotti in the pit.
