It was a rough night at the Opéra de Paris on Wednesday. Anna Netrebko canceled and the audience let the company know about its displeasure.

The Russian diva was expected to close out “Eugene Onegin” and that is exactly what everyone walking into the theater at show time expected. But right before the start of the performance, an announcement was made to indicate that the soprano had canceled the final performance due to personal reasons. She would be replaced by Elena Stikhina, but the audience was not happy. Boos and jeers and shouts calling for reimbursement rained down on the stage.

But Stikhina’s performance, per Forum Opera was one to admire.

The soprano is set to take on “La Forza del Destino” in St. Petersburg next month. Then she sings the other Leonora, this time in “Il Trovatore” in Erfurt. “Tosca” follows on her schedule with three other productions of “Il Trovatore” on her docket through the first half of 2018. The last “Trovatore” that Stikhina currently has scheduled is in Paris.

Netrebko heads to St. Petersburg for “Adriana Lecouvreur” and then to Salzburg to perform her first ever “Aida” and then returns to “Il Trovatore” before making more role debuts in “Andrea Chenier” and “Tosca.”
