By David Salazar

Catriona Morison has pulled off a massive victory at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, winning the competition’s main prize.

The mezzo was the wild card competitor entering the final round after finishing fifth in the first four rounds. But she quickly became the talk of the town after being a joint winner of the Song Prize competition and now becoming the third person to win both competitions, following Jamie Barton and Marius Brenciu.

Morison performed music of Purcell, Ravel, Strauss and Rossini on her way to victory.

Morison’s career exploits include winning the Toonkunst Oratorio Prize at the 50th edition of the Hertogenbosch Competition in Holland. She debuted with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra in 2014 and even appeared at the BBC Proms in 2013. As a member of the Wuppertal Opera she has appeared in such operas as “Les Contes d’Hoffmann,” “The Love of Three Oranges,” and “Rigoletto.” She has also performed at the Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar, the Theater Erfurt, Theater Nordhausen, Theater Hof, and the Lithuanian National Opera.

Louis Alder wound up as the audience prize winner.
