BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2017 Song Prize Winner Revealed [Spoiler Alert]

By David Salazar

CORRECTION: We apologize to Catriona Morison as a previous version of the article did not mention her as a victor. Congratulations!

Catriona Morison and Ariunbaatar Gunbaatar are your 2017 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Song Prize winners.

The selection of two winners in the contest is an unprecedented move in the competition.

Gunbaatar performed works from Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Fauré, and Sharav while Morison took one music from Schoenberg, Korngold, Brahms, Vellones, Grieg, and Orr on their way to taking home the coveted prize, beating out John Chest, Iurii Samoilov, and Louise Alder.

Both are still in the running for the top prize on Sunday and could potentially join Jamie Barton and Marius Brenciu as the only winners to take home both major prizes at the competition.

Either could of course still surprise and win all three prizes, including the “Audience Prize,” becoming the first in the competition’s history to complete the treble.
