Lukhanyo Moyake will carry the hopes of a continent when he competes at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition this summer.

Short Bio

The South African tenor studied at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa, between 2006 and 2009.  From there he went on to finish his studies at the University of Cape Town in his native country from 2010 to 2011.

He has placed first in the Emmerich Smola Förderpreis and was also a finalist at the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition in 2015.

Major Performances and Roles

The tenor has performed all around the world, with a number of prominent performances in his country. The operas that he has showcased for his compatriots include “Rigoletto,” “Madama Butterfly,” and “La Traviata.” He has also performed the roles of Crab Man and Sportin’ Life in “Porgy and Bess” all around the world, including Madrid, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, and Bordeaux.

He has appeared as Alfredo in “La Traviata” in a new production at the English National Opera, and recently took on the role of Don José in “Carmen” in Lisbon.
