BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2017 Preview: Sioned Gwen Davies Looks To Make Host Nation Proud

Mezzo-soprano Sioned Gwen Davies will be among one of the most watched stars in the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition. As a representative of Wales, she will not only be showcasing her talents but carrying the hopes of the host nation.

Short Bio

The Colwyn Bay native studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, earning an MMus degree. She completed her post graduated studies in 2012 and would eventually study at the National Opera Studio in Glyndebourne, from which she also graduated in 2015.

In 2012 she was a finalist in the Welsh Singers’ Competition and a semi-finalist in the Kathleen Ferrier Awards. She has won the 2009 Llangollen International Eisteddfod, the 2009 National Eisteddfod of Wales and earned a major accolade at the 2009 North London Festival. She also finished as a finalist in the Jackdaws Great Elm Vocal Awards and the Thelma King Award in Bath. She is representing Wales after winning the Welsh Singer Competition in 2016.

Major Roles and Performances

She earned an emerging artist contract with the Scottish Opera for the 2013-14 season after appearing as Kate in “The Pirates of Penzance.” She also performed the role of Olga in “Eugene Onegin” at the Valladolid Opera and is slated to return to the Scottish Opera and head over to the Longborough Festival Opera.
