BBC Cardiff Singer Of The World 2017 Preview: Russian Mezzo Nadezhda Karyazina To Rely On Vital Experience

As she enters the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition this summer, Russian mezzo Nadezhda Karyazina can be confident in her experience at a number of other major competitions. Here is a rundown of the career the 30-year-old has amassed to date.

Short Bio

Born in Moscow, Karyazina graduated from the Russian Academy of Theatrical Arts with a degree in musical theater. Then she went on to study at the Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center and the Young Artists Opera Program of the Bolshoi Theater. Between 2013 and 2015, she was a member of the Royal Opera’s Jette Parker Young Artists Programme.

In 2011, she was a finalist at the Neue Stimmen international singing competition in Gutersloh, Germany, and in 2012 she won second prize at the II International Singing Competition in Savonlinna. She also took home third prize at Plácido Domingo’s Operalia competition. In 2014, Nadezhda Karyazina was named “Best Young Artist” at the Österreichische Musiktheaterpreis in Austria.

Major Roles and Performances

Karyazina debuted at the Opera di Roman and Latvian National Theatre in 2012. She was invited to sing with Plácido Domingo in Beijing and performed with the famed tenor and his counterpart José Carreras in the Christmas in Moscow concerts. She also appeared at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in supporting roles in “Rigoletto,” “Manon,” and “Carmen.” She recently appeared in New Zealand in the title role of Bizet’s famed gypsy.
