At just 28-years-old, English bass Dominic Barberi is set to be a major figure at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition. He has been showcased at top companies around the world and is slated to take a big step forward in coming years.

Short Bio

Barberi went to the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland where he graduated with Distinction in his Performance Masters in 2014. While there, he studied under Stephen Obertson. He has been involved in a number of masterclasses throughout his short career with such artists as Francisco Araiza, Sir Thomas Allen, Briggite Fassbaender and Dame Ann Murray among many others.

Major Performances and Roles

The bass’ big breakthrough came with Opera North where he performed after graduation. He then moved on to the Berlin Staatsoper International Opera Studio and has since launched a massive career all over the UK in a wide range of repertoire. He has performed in Handel’s “Messiah,” Tippet’s “A Child of Our Times,” Mozart’s “Requiem” and Handel’s “Creation,” among other works.

In 2017-18 he will head to the Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck to perform in “La Gioconda.” He will also make his debut at the English National Theatre as the First Soldier in “Salome.”

Major roles have included Sarastro in “Die Zauberflöte,” Colline in “La Bohème,” Pietro in “Simon Boccanegra,” Barone Douphol in “La Traviata” (he performed under Daniel Barenboim), and Tom in “Un Ballo in Maschera.”
