Bayerische Staatsoper to Stream ‘7 Deaths of Maria Callas’

On Sept. 5, the Bayerische Staatsoper will stream the highly anticipated work the “7 Deaths of Maria Callas.”

The work, which is a creation by Marina Abramović, will stream on the Munich opera company’s website in co-production with BR Klassik and ARTE concert at 6:30 pm German time.

The work is comprised of seven different arias that Maria Callas made her own throughout her career. Among the arias included in the work are “Addio del passato” from “La Traviata,” “Vissi d’arte” from “Tosca,” “Ave Maria” from “Otello,” “Un bel dì vedremo” from “Madama Butterfly,” “Habanera” from “Carmen,” “Il dolce suono” from “Lucia di Lammermoor” and “Casta Diva” from “Norma.” The scenes are linked by new music from Serbian composer Marko Nikodijević.

The production is set to star Abramović as Maria Callas as well as Oscar-nominee Willem Dafoe, Hera Hyesang Park, Selene Zanetti, Leah Hawkins, Kiandra Howarth, Nadezhda Karyazina, Adela Zaharia, and Lauren Fagan.

The work opens on Sept. 1 and runs through Sept. 6, 2020.
