The superstar opera couple of Jonas Kaufmann and Anja Harteros reunites for a run of performances of Giordano’s “Andrea Chénier” at the Bayerische Staatsoper starting next Sunday, March 12, 2017.

Kaufmann and Harteros have performed a great deal of opera productions together over the past few years in such works as “Lohengrin,” “Il Trovatore,” “Tosca,” “Don Carlo” and “La Forza del Destino.” They also recorded Verdi’s “Aida” together under Antonio Pappano.

This is the first time that the pair performs together since last year’s Baden-Baden Gala.

Kaufmann of course recently made a triumphant return after an extended leave due to side effects from medication that caused a haematoma. After that, he opted for remaining on vocal rest until his haematoma “completely subsided.” This forced him to cancel numerous engagements, including a debut in Monte Carlo, the Grand Opening concert Hamburg as well as the Nobel Prize ceremony.

Kaufmann performed “Chénier” for the first time in January of 2015 at the Royal Opera House. That performance is available on home video. After his run in Munich, the tenor will perform the opera in Paris in March and also perform it over the summer in Munich.

This will be Harteros’ first run as Maddalena; she will join Kaufmann in Paris and this summer in Munich as well.

The duo will also bed featured in Verdi’s “La Forza del Destino,” which the pair performed for the first time in December 2013.

Luca Salsi sings the role of Carlo Gérard, which will mark his role debut. J’nai Bridges sings Bersi while Omer Meir Wellber conducts a new production by Phillip Stolzl.

The production premieres on Sunday, March 12 with subsequent presentations on the 15, 18, 22, 30 and April 2. The production returns for two performances on July 28 and 31.
