Baritone John Brancy to Release ‘A Silent Night’ Album to Commemorate World War I Composers

By David Salazar

On Thursday, April 6, 2017, baritone John Brancy and pianist Peter Dugan will perform at a VIP event at National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City with an album to follow.

The concert is a culmination of the work the duo has done together since 2014 when they made their professional recital debut at the John F. Kennedy for the Performing Arts. For years the two have been dedicated to performing music inspired by and written during the World War I era, including works from German, British, French and American composers that lived through, fought in and even died in what has been posthumously known as The Great War.

“In creating this program, our goal has been to honor the sacrifice and mourn the millions of soldiers who lost their lives in the Great War, as well as to show how music can inspire healing, unity, and peace,” Brancy said according to a press release.

The program has taken them around the continent to such venues as Carnegie Hall, the Joye in Aiken Festival, St. John’s College, University of Chicago, and the Société d’art vocal de Montréal.

The event in Kansas City is meant to commemorate the US’ entry into World War I and will be live streamed worldwide via worldwar1centennial.org.

The album, entitled “A Silent Night: A WWI Memorial in Song,” will be released at an event in New York City on April 28. The event will feature performances of selections as well as conversations with the artists. The CD will include the works of George Butterworth, Charles Ives, Carl Orff, Gerald Finzi, Ivor Gurney, Maurice Ravel, and Francis Poulenc among others.
