Barbara Hannigan & Franz Welser-Möst Headline Cleveland Orchestra’s 2019-20 Season

The Cleveland Orchestra has announced its 2019-20 season featuring a number of soloists and great conductors. For the purpose of this article we will only focus on the vocal and operatic performances.

Joélle Harvey performs in a program entitled “Adams and Mahler” with conductor Jakub Hrůša leading The Cleveland Orchestra and Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, members of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus, and members of the Cleveland Orchestra Children’s Chorus. The program includes Adams’ “On the Transmigration of Souls” and  Mahler’s Symphony No. 4.

Performance Dates: Nov. 14-17, 2019

Sasha Cooke and Dashon Burton perform the Cleveland Orchestra premiere of Michael Tilson Thomas’ New Work. The conductor-composer also leads the orchestra in Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture and Symphonie Fantastique. 

Performance Dates: Feb. 20-23, 2020

Franz Welser-Möst leads soloists Christina Landshamer, Martina Janková, and Julian Prégardien in Mendelssohn’s Second Symphony. The concert also features Krenek’s “Static and Ecstatic [Statisch und ekstatisch].”

Performance Dates: March 5-8, 2020

The Cleveland Orchestra is set to present Berg’s “Lulu” in a two-act concert version. Franz Welser-Möst conducts Berg’s monumental score with leading interpreter Barbara Hannigan in the title role. Rainer Trost will sing the painter with Bo Skovhus as Dr. Schön and Norbert Ernst as Alwa. John Tomlinson will perform Schigolch, while Jennifer Johnson Cano is set for Geschwitz.

Performance Dates: May 16- 22, 2020

Franz Welser-Möst and Barbara Hannigan join forces for a concert entitled “African American and Czech Composers,” featuring Still’s Poem for Orchestra, Krenek’s “Die Nachtigall [The Nightingale],” and Schulhoff’s  Symphony No. 5.

Performance Date: May 23, 2020
