BAFTA Nominations 2017: Meryl Streep Lands Her 15th Nomination For ‘Florence Foster Jenkins’

By Francisco Salazar

On Jan. 10 the BAFTAs announced the nominations for its annual awards.

Among the nominees was “Florence Foster Jenkins.” The film obtained four nominations including Best Actress for Meryl Streep and Best Supporting Actor for Hugh Grant. The film also landed Best Costume Design and Best Makeup nominations.

The nominations come on the heels of the Golden Globe and SAG nominations. Streep was not seen as a lock for the an Oscar nomination due to the tough competition. However, in addition to the BAFTA she has already garnered the Globe and SAG nominations making it an easier path to the Oscar. If Streep is nominated at the end of the month for the Oscar, it would mark her 20th nomination, making her the first actor to ever reach the number.

However, it is still questionable if she could win the BAFTA as she will competing against Natalie Portman, Emma Stone, Emily Blunt and Amy Arrival.

Meanwhile Grant is competing for his second BAFTA in the Best Supporting Actor category. The actor is up against Dev Patel, Jeff Bridges, Mahershala Ali and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Like Streep Grant has obtained a SAG and Globe nomination in addition to the BAFTA nomination.

“Florence Foster Jenkins” tells the story of a woman who is considered the worst Opera Singer of all time. The film feature rising star Aida Garifullina in the role of Lily Pons.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will hand out its nominations on Jan. 24. The BAFTA awards will be handed out on Feb. 12 at the Royal Opera House in the Covent Garden.
