AVA Opera Announces 2017-18 Season

The Academy of Vocal Arts Opera has announced its 2017-18 season.

The season will begin with New Artist Recitals on Sept. 19 and 21 at Helen Corning Warden Theater, AVA. It will be followed by the Giargiari Bel Canto Competition on Oct. 7 at the Perelman Theater, Kimmel Center.

On Nov. 4 audiences will be able to see Verdi’s “Il Trovatore” with Christofer Macatsoris conducting and Tito Capobianco directing. The opening will be a Black-Tie event and will be followed by four more performances.

On Dec. 12 and 14, AVA will present Russian Romances with music director and pianist Ghenady Meirson. The concerts will be followed the University’s second opera, Wagner’s “Das Rheingold,” with piano accompaniment by Luke Housner. The opera opens on Jan. 20, 2018 and runs through 30.

On Feb. 6 and 8, AVA will present Recital #2 with a pianist to be announced.

Following that the Academy will showcase Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos” between Feb. 24 through March 3. David Aronson will conduct the production at the Helen Corning Warden Theater.

Then on March 17 and 18, AVA will give a concert entitled “Jubilate! A Concert of Sacred Music” with the AVA Opera Orchestra and conductor David Antony Lofton.

Recital #3 will take place on April and 5 and will be followed by AVA’s final production, Verdi’s “La Traviata.” Christofer Macatsoris will conduct and Jeffrey Marc Buchman will direct the production which opens on April 21 and ends on April 28.

The season concludes with a Farewell Recital on May 8 with Music Director and Pianist José Meléndez accompanying.
