Atlanta Chorus Master Steps Down After 28 Years

By David Salazar

The Atlanta Opera’s renowned chorus master Walter Huff is stepping down after decades of service.

The announcement came Thursday as the Maestro determined to focus on his work at Indiana Unversity. According to a press release, his tenure process starts in April and his last official day with Atlanta Opera will be January 1, 2017.

“My admiration of Walter cannot be quantified or expressed in words,” said Tomer Zvulun, General and Artistic Director of The Atlanta Opera. “We have worked together for the past 12 years, first as a stage director and chorus master, and then as a general director and chorus master. I truly believe that his professionalism and brilliant leadership of our esteemed chorus are unparalleled.”

Huff joined the company in 1988 and led the chorus in over 110 productions.

“I am very grateful for the opportunities and experiences I have had with The Atlanta Opera,” Mo. Huff said. “I want to thank all of the chorus members who I had the honor to lead for the past 28 years. I am confident that The Atlanta Opera will continue to build great programs and deliver world-class performances.”

Maestro Rolando Salazar, who is the company’s current assistant conductor, assistant chorus master and music administrator will be the Chorus Master for the company’s upcoming “Don Pasquale.” He has been with the company for four years.

The Atlanta Opera’s next engagement will be Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale,” which kicks off on March 25, 2017 for four performances. The company then closes out the 2016-17 season with a production of Puccini’s “Turandot” in late April.
