Artist Of The Week: Liana Aleksanyan Headlines ‘Aida’ At The Macerata Festival

By Francisco Salazar

Liana Aleksanyan has had a rollercoaster year making an unexpected debut at the Teatro alla Scala and establishing herself as one of the most acclaimed Cio-Cio Sans of her generation. This week she continues her ascension in the opera world headlining “Aida” at the Macerata Opera Festival.

The assumption of Aida brings Aleksanyan to another stage in her career as she takes on the more dramatic Verdi works. The Armenian soprano has been acclaimed for her work in many of the lyric Verdi operas such as “Rigoletto,” “La Traviata,’ “Ernani,” and “I Masnadieri” as well as “Otello” and “Luisa Miller.” ‘Aida” is one of the iconic soprano characters and with Aleksanyan’s lush voice, she should easily triumph in the new production by Francesco Micheli.

Aleksanyan has made a name for her in many of the great European theaters. She started her musical career at the age of 9 with piano lessons and at 16 she became a voice student. She went on to make her professional debut in “La Traviata” at the Armenian National Theatre in Yerevan. Since then she has sung at the Oslo National Opera House, Wiener Volksoper, Staatstheater Braunschweig,  Hamburg State Opera, Staatstheater Bern, Staatsoper Stuttgart, Komische Oper Berlin, Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf, and Deutsche Oper Berlin.

Her repertoire has also been vast, including the title role of “Lucia di Lammermoor,” Micaëla in “Carmen” and Blanche in “Dialogues of the Carmelites.”

For those that miss the opportunity to see Aleksanyan’s “Aida,” the soprano has many high profile engagements coming up including two productions of “Madama Butterfly” at the Palau de les Arts and Deutsche Oper Am der Rhein. Here she will continue to showcase why she is so in-demand for the Butterfly.
