Monglia’s Ariunbaatar Ganbaatar will move on to the final round of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Main Prize.

The baritone defeated tenor Konstantin Lee, mezzo Sione Gwen Davies, Ivan Thirion, and mezzo Miriam Albano to get among the five finalists for the big showcase.

His repertoire for the main prize included Rodrigo’s final two arias from Verdi’s “Don Carlo” and the famed “Eri tu” from “Un Ballo in Maschera.”

Ganbaatar is a graduate of the Mongolian State University of Culture and Art, where he studied under Professor O. Ichinkhorloo between 2005 and 2010. He has also won a number of major competitions including the 24th Glinka International Vocal Contest in Moscow and was given a major honor in his country.

He has performed with the Buryat State Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Ulan-Ude, Russia. He performed at Carnegie Hall in 2015, as well as at the Bolshoi Theatre and Cadogan Hall, and even got a chance to perform Yeletsky’s Aria from “The Queen of Spades” at Buckingham Palace.

He will now compete with Anthony Clark Evans, who was named the winner of the first round of the competition. The final takes place on Sunday.
