Anthony Clark Evans Wins Round 1 of BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2017 Main Prize

By David Salazar

Anthony Clark Evans has won the first round of the Main Prize competition at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition.

The American baritone performed excerpts from three different romantic composers including Bizet, Wagner and Leoncavallo. He kicked off his first concert with “L’orage s’est calmé… O Nadir, tender ami,” from “Les Pêcheurs des Perles.” That was followed by “Wohl wusst’ ich hier sie im Gebet zu finden” from “Tannhäuser.” To conclude, Evans sang “Si può? Si può? Signore!” from “Pagliacci.”

At 32, American baritone Anthony Clark Evans is among the oldest singers in this year’s BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition and famously switched careers from being a car salesman to being an opera singer only at the tail-end of his 20s.

His 2017 has been quite the ride as the baritone won a Richard Tucker Career Grant and made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in “Rusalka,” and the San Francisco Opera in “Madama Butterfly.”

He defeated Roberto Lorenzi, Lilly Jorstad, Nadezhda Karyazina and Batjargal Bayarsaikhan in the first round of concerts.

The second round of the Main Prize competition continues on Tuesday.
