Anna Netrebko to Sing Major Strauss Role At The Metropolitan Opera

By Francisco Salazar

Anna Netrebko will perform Strauss’ “Salome” at the Metropolitan Opera in a future season.

The news was revealed in an interview with Music Director Designate Yannick Nezet-Seguin. The New York Times also revealed that for Nezet-Seguin’s first season the company will open with Verdi’s “Aida,” starring Netrebko in a new production.

The interview also revealed that Nezet-Seguin wants to perform more world premieres and new pieces at the house. During the interview, the conductor noted that he wants to make the Met more welcoming and a place that can reach all types of audiences. Among the composers that Nezet-Seguin is thinking of bringing to the Met include Missy Mazzoli (“Breaking the Waves”), Jennifer Higdon (“Cold Mountain”) and Andrew Norman.

Netrebko is slated to make her role debut as Aida at the Salzburg Festival this season. The soprano previously sang the “Four Last Songs” by Richard Strauss and sang her first major German role last season in Wagner’s “Lohengrin.”

Netrebko and Yannick Nezet-Seguin previously collaborated at the Salzburg Festival in Gounod’s “Roméo et Juliette.” Nezet-Seguin is slated to take over as music director at the Metropolitan Opera in 2020-21. His initial contract is slated for four years.
