Anna Netrebko, Sonya Yoncheva, And Francesco Meli Headline Starry Teatro Alla Scala 2017-18 Season

The Teatro alla Scala has announced its 2017-18 season.

The season opens with Giordano’s “Andrea Chénier” starring Anna Netrebko, Yusif Eyvazov, and Luca Salsi. Riccardo Chailly and Mario Martone direct the production, which opens on Dec. 7, 2017.

On Jan. 11, 2018, Cornelius Obonya and Carolin Pienkos direct a new production of Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” starring Eva Mei, Markus Werba, and Daniela Fally. Zubin Mehta conducts the production, which runs through Feb. 11, 2018.

Verdi’s “Simon Boccanegra” gets a revival on Feb. 8, 2018, with Leo Nucci in the title role and Krassimira Stoyanova. The cast is rounded out by Dmitri Belosselskiy and Fabio Sartori.

Juan Diego Flórez brings his acclaimed Orphée to La Scala in Gluck’s “Orphée et Eurydice” with Christiane Karg as Eurydice. Michele Mariotti conducts the performances, which also mark the first French performances of the opera at La Scala. The production bows on Feb. 24, 2018.

Davide Livermore directs a new production of Donizetti’s comic gem “Don Pasquale” starring Ambrogio Maestri and Rosa Feola. Riccardo Chailly conducts the production, which opens on April 3.

Fabio Luisi conducts a new production by David Pountney of Zandonai’s “Francesca da Rimini.” The production, opening April 15, 2018, stars Maria Jose Siri and Roberto Aronica.

Legendary conductor Nello Santi conducts Franco Zeffirelli’s production of Verdi’s “Aida.” Krassimira Stoyanova stars in the title role with Violetta Urmana, Fabio Sartori, and Marcelo Alvarez. The revival begins May 8, 2018, and runs through June 3 and will celebrate Franco Zeffirelli’s 95th birthday

On June 5, 2018, Daniel Harding conducts a new production of Schubert’s “Fierrabras” with Bernard Richter, Anett Frisch, and Dorothea Röschmann. Peter Stein directs the Salzburg production and it marks the first time the opera is presented at La Scala.

Deborah Warner’s production of Beethoven’s “Fidelio” gets a revival with Stuart Skelton and Simone Schneider. Myung-Whun Chung conducts the revival, which opens on June 18, 2018.

On June 29, 2018, Christof Loy directs a new production of Bellini’s “Il Pirata” with Sonya Yoncheva in the lead role. Piero Pretti and Nicola Alaimo round out the cast, which is conducted by Riccardo Frizza.

Cherubini returns to La Scala as Liliana Cavani directs a new production of the rarely performed “Ali Baba e i 40 Ladroni.” Soloists of the Teatro alla Scala Academy of Lyric Opera will lead the opera with Paolo Carignani conducting. The production opens on Sept. 1, 2018.

Francesco Meli returns to La Scala for a new production of Verdi’s “Ernani” directed by Sven-Eric Bechtolf. Adam Fischer conducts the production, which also stars Ailyn Perez, Simone Piazzola, and Ildar Abdrazakov. The production opens on Sept. 29, 2018.

Diego Fasolis conducts Mozart’s “La Finta Giardiniera” on period instruments starring Hanna-Elisabeth Müller, Anett Fritsch, and Giulia Semenzato. The Glyndebourne production arrives at La Scala on Oct. 8, 2018.

Ricarda Merbeth and Waltraud Meier lead the revival of Strauss’ “Elektra” with Christoph von Dohnányi leading the orchestra. The production by Patrice Chéreau opens on Nov. 4, 2018.

The season closes with György Kurtág’s “Fin de Partie.” Pierre Audi directs the production, which will be conducted by Markus Stenz and opens on Nov. 15, 2018.

Recitals 

The season will also include numerous recitals by Sonya Yoncheva, Ana Caterina Antonacci, Michele Pertusi, Diana Damrau, Ildar Abdrazakov, and Olga Peretyatko.

Concerts 

Miah Persson will be featured in Mahler’s Symphony No.2 with Daniele Gatti conducting, while María José Siri and Simone Piazzola join Riccardo Chailly for “Messa for Rossini.” Krassimira Stoyanova joins Zubin Mehta for works by Johann Strauss Senior and Jr.
