Amore Opera To Present Two Gypsy Operas To Close Out 2016-17 Season

By David Salazar

Amore Opera has just announced its next two opera productions for May and June with gypsies dominating their thematic material.

The company’s main website revealed that Bizet’s “Carmen” and Donizetti’s “La Zingara” would be taking the stage to close out the 2017-18 season.

The former work is one of the best known in the entire repertoire while the latter is a true rarity. The Donizetti opera premiered on May 12, 1822 at the Teatro Nuovo. Giancinta Canonici, Caterina Monticelli, Marco Venier and Carlo Moncada were the singers for the premiere. The opera narrates the story of a gypsy girl that brings together two lovers, saves the life of a Duke and ultimately resolves all the conflicts in the opera.

There is but one recording of the work from 2001 featuring Manuela Custer, Rosita Ramini, Massimiliano Barbolini, Piero Terranova and Cataldo Gallone with Arnold Bosman conducting.

Despite the opera’s relative obscurity, some singers have recorded select arias, including Anna Moffo and Teresa Berganza.

The company recently presented a run of Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” as part of its winter holiday celebration.

The Amore Opera came about after the closing of the famed Amato Opera Theatre in 2009 when the musicians that formed that previous company came together. The company secured the sets, costumes and props of Amato Opera Theater.
