All The Major Opera Stars Performing At The Vienna State Opera 2017-18 Season

The Vienna State Opera has announced its 2017-18 season with six new productions and 48 revivals. Given the sheer size of the schedule, you might expect the company to feature opera’s greatest stars. You would be absolutely right.

As always the company will feature the biggest stars in the world including Anna Netrebko in her second run of performances of Cilea’s “Adriana Lecouvreur” after her much-anticipated role debut at the Mariinsky Theater this summer. The soprano will also be featured in Verdi’s “Il Trovatore” in a production she recently opened to acclaim.

Jonas Kaufmann will return to Vienna for another run of Giordano’s “Andrea Chenier” in Otto Schenk’s classic production.

Dmitri Hvorostovsky will star as  Verdi’s “Rigoletto” as well as Anakarstrom in Verdi’s “Un Ballo in Maschera” and Verdi’s “Otello.” Despite reports that he would be canceling opera productions for the foreseeable future, the baritone is now scheduled to appear in Vienna, London, and Barcelona in 2017-18.

In addition to his work in Saint-Saens’ “Samson et Dalila,” Roberto Alagna will be performing the title role of Verdi’s “Otello” and Puccini’s “Turandot.”

Rolando Villazón takes on the title role of Gounod’s “Faust” and will also participate in the revival of Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin.” Sonya Yoncheva joins Villazon as Marguerite in “Faust” while Elina Garanca takes on her first Dalila in “Samson et Dalila.”

Kristine Opolais takes on her signature role as “Madama Butterfly” while Juan Diego Flórez will sing the role of the Duke in Verdi’s “Rigoletto.”

Plácido Domingo reprises his acclaimed Giorgio Germont in Verdi’s “La Traviata” while Piotr Beczala showcases his talents in Cilea’s “Adriana Lecouvreur” and Bizet’s “Carmen.”

Isabel Leonard will take on Rossini’s “La Cenerentola” while Marina Rebeka will take on her first Amelia in Verdi’s “Simon Boccanegra.”

Anita Hartig will perform her signature Michaela in Bizet’s “Carmen,” and Mimì in Puccini’s “La Bohème” while Angela Gheorghiu will reprise her acclaimed “Tosca.”

Carmen Giannattasio takes on the role of Leonora in “Il Trovatore” while Aleksandra Kurzak will perform in both “Turandot” and “Otello.” Krassimira Stoyanova reprises her acclaimed Marschallin in Strauss’ “Der Rosenkavalier” and takes on the title role in Dvorak’s “Rusalka.”

Meanwhile, Thomas Hampson brings his acclaimed “Simon Boccanegra” to Vienna audiences while Irene Theorin headlines The Ring Cycle as Brünnhilde.

Evelyn Herlitzius sings her acclaimed “Elektra” and steps out of Strauss and Wagner for Janacek’s “Katja Kabanova.”

The King of the High Cs Javier Camarena brings his acclaimed Ernesto to Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale” and also highlights his nine high Cs in “La Fille Du Regiment.”

Rising star Aida Garifullina singer her first Gilda in “Rigoletto” and Musetta in “La Boheme” while Adrianne Pieczonka sings Chrysothemis in “Elektra” Amelia in Verdi’s “Un Ballo in Maschera” and “Tosca.”

Carlos Alvarez sings Bizet’s “Carmen,” “La Fille du Regiment,” and Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” while Olga Peretyatko-Mariotti will perform the title role in Verdi’s “La Traviata.”

Finally, Vittorio Grigolo will bring his comic timing to Donizetti’s “L’Elisir D’amore” in Otto Schenk’s timeless production while Waltraud Meier will sing Klytamenestra in “Elektra.”

Other stars include Simon Keenlyside, Erwin Schrott, Aleksandrs Antonenko, Ambrogio Maestri, Ryan Speedo Green, Anita Rachvelishvili and Danielle De Niese.
