‘Aida’ From The Salzburg Festival Breaks Records

Opera continues to break records with this weekend’s ratings of Verdi’s “Aida.”

According to ORF, the TV screening of “Aida” from the Salzburg Festival took a 17 percent market share this weekend. The reports noted that there were an estimated 473,000 viewers. The production starred reigning diva Anna Netrebko, Francesco Meli, Ekaterina Semenchuk and Luca Salsi.  Riccardo Muti conducted the Vienna Philharmonic in a production by Shirin Neshat.

“Aida” marks the highest rating for an opera since Salzburg’s “La Bohème” in 2012. That production, directed by Damiano Micheletto, also starred Anna Netrebko in the title role and Piotr Beczala. Massimo Cavalletti and Nino Machaidze also starred with Daniele Gatti conducting the Vienna Philharmonic.

“Aida” premiered on August 6 with critics raving about the musical performances. The Telegraph noted, “A superb cast and the peerless Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra are his willing servants – slaves, perhaps. Anna Netrebko makes a thrilling debut in the title role, singing with a polish and elegance.”

“Aida” is slated to be presented on ZDF on August 25 and the opera will be performed at the Salzburg Festival until August 25. Yusif Eyvazov and Vittoria Yeo headline the final two performances taking over for Meli and Netrebko.
