A Look at George Michael’s Brief Relationship With the Opera World

By Francisco Salazar

On Dec. 25 the pop star George Michael passed away at 53 and with it the music industry lost an icon.

The English-born singer may have been known for his hit songs “Careless Whisper” and “One More Try,” but he also dedicated his life to charity work. This included appearances at several concerts for charity. He joined Luciano Pavarotti during the tenor’s famed “Pavarotti and Friends” concert and the two sang “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down” to rousing applause.

Michael’s achievements also included a Symphonica tour where the pop star performed alongside a full orchestra in some of the world’s greatest opera houses. Among the houses were the Royal Opera House and the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Prague State Opera House. The orchestras that accompanied the singer included the Wrocław Philharmonic Orchestra of Poland and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra of Prague. During the tour the singer had to cancel several engagements due to illness but eventually recovered and continued the tour in 2012.

Michael released an album entitled “Symphonica” that included the songs performed during the European tour. The album was released by EMI.
