Report: Renee Fleming’s ‘Der Rosenkavalier’ at the Metropolitan Opera isn’t Quite a Farewell

By OperaWire

Renee Fleming has confirmed that the new production of Strauss’ “Der Rosenkavalier” is her final production at the Metropolitan Opera.

After much speculation the American diva confirmed it was her last contract with the company. She said in an interview with the Financial Times, “Yes, after Rosenkavalier at the Met, that is it, unless a new role comes along that is fit for me now.”

However, she does not rule out returning to the company and added, “But I remember being at Elisabeth Söderström’s farewell at the Met, which was also Rosenkavalier, and I was crying along with everybody else. Then a few years later she came back. So this is something I have learnt from my colleagues. Never say ‘never’!”

Fleming notes that if she can find the correct role to return she would be more than open to singing something new.

Fleming is  currently rehearsing Robert Carsen’s new production at the Royal Opera House where she will sing alongside Alice Coote. The production opens on Dec. 17 and runs until Jan, 24. Fleming then goes to New York where she will sing the same production with Elina Garanca, Matthew Polenzani and Erin Morley. The production will be transmitted live in HD.

Last season Fleming celebrated her 25th anniversary since her Metropolitan Opera Debut and a special dinner was held for her. For years Fleming has made Strauss one of her specialty composers and in particular has made the role of the Marschallin a signature. Her recording from the Baden Baden Festival of “Der Rosenkavalier” was released on CD and DVD by DECCA and was also recorded in the Live in HD series at the Metropolitan Opera with Susan Graham.
