10 Must See Operas For The Fall Season 2018 [International Edition]

The 2018-19 season is about to start with numerous new productions, revivals and world premieres.

With a ton of selections to be sure in many of the world’s greatest houses, we whittled it down to the 10 Must-See productions operas that you cannot miss this fall.

Medée – Berlin State Opera 

Sonya Yoncheva takes on her 50th role in Cherubini’s rarely performed work in a new production by Andrea Breth and conducted by legend Daniel Barenboim. The cast also includes Charles Castronuovo, Elsa Dreisig, Marina Prudenskaya, and Iain Patterson.

The Production opens Oct. 7, 2018

Porgy and Bess – English National opera

Nicole Cabell and Eric Greene star in a new production of Gershwin’s beloved work. The new production James Robinson, which is also slated for the Metropolitan Opera in a later season will also include the great Latonia Moore and will be conducted by John Wilson.

The Production opens Oct. 11, 2018

Attila – Teatro alla Scala 

Davide Livermore directs a new production of Verdi’s early masterpiece. Ildar Abdrazakov opens the new season in his signature role with Saioa Hernandez making her La Scala debut and becoming one of the first Spanish singers to open the Italian season. Fabio Sartori also stars with Riccardo Chailly conducting the production.

Bérénice – Opera de Paris 

Barbara Hannigan creates the role of Bérénice in Michael Jarrell’s new opera created for the lyric soprano. Bo Skovhus, Alastair Miles and Ivan Lulow also star in the opera, which will be directed by Claus Guth and conducted by music director Phillippe Jordan.

The Production opens Sept. 26, 2018

Com Que Voz – Teatro Real de Madrid 

Stefano Gervasoni’s Portuguese opera makes its Spanish premiere. Inspired by sonnets of Camões and the fados of Amália Rodrigues, the opera will be conducted by Nacho de Paz  and will present various combinations of musicians from the opera house orchestra to create a dialogue between two distinct musical universes in the voice of baritone Frank Wörner. The work will be seen at the Naves Matadero for a first collaboration with the Teatro Real.

Die Weiden – Wiener Staatsoper

Tomasz Konieczny and Andrea Carroll star in Johannes Maria Staud’s new opera commissioned especially for the Wiener Staatsoper. Ingo Metzmacher conducts the new opera which will be directed by Andrea Moses.

The production opens Dec. 8, 2018

Otello – Bayerische Staatsoper 

Jonas Kaufmann returns to the Mount Everest of tenor roles from a few seasons ago. The tenor will be joined by his frequent on-stage partner Anja Harteros and Gerald Finley. Amélie Niermeyer directs the production with music director Kirill Petrenko, conducting Verdi’s masterpiece.

Il Castello di Kenilworth – Donizetti Opera Festival 

Jessica Pratt and Carmela Remigio star in one of Donizetti’s rarely performed operas at the Bergamo festival Stefan Pop rounds out the cast which will be conducted by Riccardo Frizza. Maria Pilar Pérez Aspa directs the new production.

The Production opens Nov. 24, 2018

The Ring Cycle – Royal Opera House 

Antonio Pappano conducts Wagner’s epic tetralogy in a revival, which is set to star Stuart Skelton, Emily Magee, John Lundgren, Stefan Vinke, Karen Cargill, and Nina Stemme.

The Ring Cycle opens Sept. 24, 2018

Anna Bolena – Opera de Bordeaux

Opera diva Marina Rebeka makes her long-awaited debut in Donizetti’s demanding Tudor queen following a successful “Maria Stuarda.” The soprano takes the stage alongside Ekaterina Semenchuk and Darren Pene Pati. Marie-Louise Bischofberger directs the production with Paul Daniel conducting.
